In 1972, the first and only feminist newspaper in New Orleans was established: Distaff. Distaff was essentially a forum for women to freely use their voices to discuss politics, arts, culture, and activism. Because it was the first and only of its kind in the Gulf South region of the country, it covered a large range of issues with regards to women's rights. For example, most issues covered stories from reproductive rights and politics, to LQBT activism, to equal pay for women (still not quite there yet...), the Equal Rights Amendment, literature and politics concerning women's rights. The publication was produced by a group of women in New Orleans who were known for their activism regarding women's rights. The first issue was published in 1973 and continued until 1982, although there was a short hiatus of publishing for a short couple of years in 1976.
